Two killed after plane crashes into Lake Michigan

CUDAHY (WITI) -- The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation after a 1975 Piper single engine plane crashed into Lake Michigan on Saturday, July 27th. The NTSB and FAA are also involved in the investigation.

Investigators say two were killed in the plane crash.

On Sunday, FOX6 News learned the name of the pilot is Bill Gensler, whom friends say had a lot of flying experience.

Officials aren't sure exactly how many people were on board at the time of the crash, but because the plane seats four, officials say they will continue to search for two additional individuals "until they know otherwise."

Investigators were tipped off to the plane crash Saturday when a plane took off from Racine and later disappeared from radar.

Then, a debris field was found later in Cudahy -- about a mile and a half off-shore.

The plane was found below 42 feet of water, and inside, officials discovered two deceased middle-aged men.

FOX6 News spoke with the plane's owner, who was not on board, but did not know who was on board the plane at the time of the crash.

A search for two additional individuals who may have been on board was called off Saturday night due to darkness.

The plane is a 1975 Piper single engine aircraft that was flying from Racine. Airport officials in Racine say the plane was heading for Milwaukee, however the Coast Guard says the wife of one of the deceased men indicated the plane was heading to Oshkosh for EAA AirVenture.
