Slick roads, black ice likely to blame for multiple crashes, including fatal at Hoan Bridge

MILWAUKEE -- A vehicle plunged off Milwaukee's Hoan Bridge, killing the driver on Monday morning, December 19th. It was just one of several crashes related to road conditions and black ice.

Rescuers tried to reach the driver inside a small truck that appeared to land on its top after dropping 30 to 40 feet off the Hoan Bridge.

Eric Dolister was driving past, making a delivery to those at the sewerage district.

"I came in and was told about it right away; to watch out. And the second delivery I had was right next to it. I ended up passing it," Dolister said.

As far as details on the Hoan Bridge incidents, officials are not releasing more information at this time.

Meanwhile, officials with the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office said there were numerous incidents during the morning drive. Department of Transportation cameras caught some of the pile-ups on I-43 and Capitol Drive and National Avenue.

Officials said there were 40 property damage crashes, one injury aside from the fatal crash and 25 calls for assistance.

Black ice near the S. 35th Street on-ramp and the S. 27th Street on-ramp forced officials to close them temporarily.

Many of Monday morning's crashes are still under investigation. But icy weather seems to be a common factor.
