MADISON — Wisconsin saw the slowest one-day increase in the number of positive cases of the coronavirus in the state since March on Monday, April 13, officials with the Wisconsin Department of Health Services announced. As of Monday afternoon, there were 3,428 positive cases of COVID-19 in Wisconsin. Of those, 993 (29%) have required hospitalization. DHS officials reported 154 deaths statewide, and said 36,7689 tested negative for the virus.
State officials said this is evidence the spread is slowing, we are flattening the curve by abiding by the stay-at-home orders and there's hope on the horizon.
A total of 42% of those who died in Wisconsin were black, and 53% of those who died were white. While more females have tested positive for the coronavirus, males have accounted for 60% of the deaths in Wisconsin.
For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.
During Monday's news conference, Governor Tony Evers responded to President Donald Trump's assertion that the president can open up states that have stay-at-home orders, saying, "I don't believe that's an accurate statement."
President Trump asserted Monday that he is the ultimate decision-maker for determining how and when to relax the nation's social distancing guidelines as he grows anxious to reopen the coronavirus-stricken country as soon as possible.
Governors and local leaders, who have instituted mandatory restrictions that have the force of law, have expressed concern that President Trump's plan to restore normalcy will cost lives and extend the duration of the outbreak.
President Trump has pushed to reopen the economy, which has plummeted as businesses have shuttered, leaving millions of people out of work and struggling to obtain basic commodities.
