"So much goes on in MKE:" VISIT Milwaukee teams up with Uber to encourage folks to tour their city

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- How often do you get out and tour your own town? This weekend, VISIT Milwaukee teamed up with Uber to encourage people to become tourists in their own city.

"I go to the Art Museum every Sunday almost," Antoine Hicks said.

Hicks knows where the tourists go in Milwaukee.

"A lot of people go to the Harley-Davidson Museum," Hicks said.

Hicks has been driving folks around for a year as an Uber driver.

VISIT Milwaukee officials say in 2014, tourism-related business brought an estimated $4.9 billion into Milwaukee and the four-county area.

"And that`s responsible for about 49,000 full-time jobs," Kristin Settle with VISIT Milwaukee said.

This weekend, VISIT Milwaukee launched a promotion in the hopes of turning locals in the city into hometown tourists.

"We partnered with our friends at Uber to create a cash cab situation where anyone who takes an Uber the weekend of May 8th through the 10th is entered to win a contest," Settle said.

It was basically a quiz about Milwaukee -- given out in select Uber cars.

"Where you can win a Milwaukee staycation package," Settle said.

On a foggy Mother's Day Sunday, May 10th, Hicks spotted families at the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Milwaukee Public Market and the Pabst Mansion. With summer around the corner, he says business is sure to pick up!

"Summerfest, State Fair -- there`s a different kind of festival every day. So much goes on in Milwaukee in the summer," Hicks said.

The purpose of promotions like this one is to give people who live in Milwaukee an excuse to enjoy the city like a tourist would -- and maybe visit a spot they've passed several times but have never actually been to.
