Spontaneous combustion: Fire at Green Bay high school will affect the school year

GREEN BAY (AP) — A Green Bay high school heavily damaged by fire won't be opening on schedule next month.

Cleanup continues at Preble High School where more than 100 people are working to remove soot and repair water damage.

School officials are discussing how to handle classes for the 2,000 students who attend Preble. Principal Natasha Rowell says educators and students will have to make up for any instructional time that's lost.

Classes were scheduled to begin September 2nd.

Fire officials say spontaneous combustion caused the fire.

Fire Lt. Nick Craig says rags used in the resurfacing of the gym floor were put in a plastic garbage can and combusted.

Craig says it took about 15,000 gallons of water to put out the fire last Friday, August 8th.
