Stamp Out Hunger collects food for families in huge single-day drive
MILWAUKEE -- The nation's largest single-day food drive kicked on Saturday, May 12. It's called Stamp Out Hunger.
People can leave non-perishable food items next to their mailbox and letter carriers with the United States Postal Service will pick it up on their delivery routes.
"We actually measure the food, and we have a tally at the end of the day and see which district has as much as they do. We get a lot of food and people really need it with the economy," letter carrier Melanie Limon said.
In Milwaukee, workers brought food back to local post offices where volunteers loaded the food on Hunger Task Force trucks.
"It's super important. There are a lot of families who are need, seniors who are going without proper nutrition. This is an opportunity for one neighbor to help another neighbor," Sherrie Tussler, executive director of the Hunger Task Force said.
Officials say more than three million pounds of food were collected throughout Wisconsin last year.
Non-perishable food items can be left at your mailbox through Monday, May 14th, or you can drop them off at your local post office.
