MILWAUKEE -- Letter carriers all across the country are doing their part to help feed the hungry. Saturday, May 14th was the national 'Stamp Out Hunger' food drive.
Here's how the program works: letter carriers pick up food left on doorsteps inside plastic bags, then they deliver it to a local food bank.
In Milwaukee, about 1,200 carriers are able to gather between 500,000 and 800,000 pounds of food in just eight hours!

Those food banks, like Milwaukee's Hunger Task Force, then distribute all of that food to area food pantries.
"It's a very convenient food drive for the average person but it's a big deal too because we're using literally a whole work force -- the United States Postal Service and all their letter carriers are working today to combat hunger," said Hunger Task Force Director, Sherrie Tussler.
If you missed the pick-up and you'd still like to donate food or money to the cause, you can go to your local Pick 'N Save and donate there later this week.
