Flooding Sunday in South Milwaukee

SOUTH MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- South Milwaukee was hit by the storms that rolled through on Sunday, November 17th -- and the heavy downpours and high winds caused power outages and street flooding.

When a storm rolls through, one of the last places you want to be is on the roof -- but that's where Jeffrey Siegel was on Sunday morning.

"I was putting some shingles on a lean-to. I'm soaked. My jacket's four times heavier than it was when I started," Siegel said.

A self-described "storm spotter," Siegel decided part-way through the morning to take a look at what was happening with the weather.

"I just look where it is so I can get out of the way basically and help other people get out of the way too. I jumped up and I go up on the high ground there so I could see to the southwest," Siegel said.

Then came the downpour.

"A couple of quarter-sized hail hit my windshield," Siegel said.

Sheets of rain came down so hard the leaf-clogged sewers couldn't keep up.

"It was totally flooded at the end of the block," Heather and Kevin Budney said.

Heather and Kevin Budney were among 3,500 South Milwaukeeans who lost power in the storm.

"We were in the living room and all of a sudden we saw flashes of blue light and pops and then we were like 'okay, what's going on?' Then it happened again and then the power went out so yeah, it was pretty scary. We grabbed the dogs and the cat and the kid and went downstairs. It was out for about an hour," Heather and Kevin Budney said.

We Energies crews were working in the area shortly after the storm rolled through. All customers had their power restored around 12:30 p.m.

The streets returned to normal too, as residents popped out to help during a break in the rain.

"It was the top of the curb and that was about it and I seen a couple people up the block. They were moving leaves out of the way, and once they got the stuff out of the way it cleared out pretty fast," Siegel said.

Milwaukee County Emergency Management told FOX6 News there were no major damage reports in South Milwaukee.
