Student apprehended after suspicious device found at Racine Park H.S.

RACINE -- A 14-year-old student from Racine Park High School was apprehended Tuesday, October 2nd for recklessly endangering safety and possession of explosive materials. This, after a suspicious device was found in the high school shortly after 8 a.m.

The school was evacuated after the "MacGyver" or bottle bomb was located in a garbage can on the third floor of the school.

Officers located a plastic water bottle in the garbage can. It contained a cloudy fluid.

The Racine Fire Department responded to assist with the investigation and determined the bottle was not an explosive danger. The bottle was removed from the school.

Officers learned the 14-year-old suspect did not assemble the device correctly and the bottle bomb did not explode. 

A "MacGyver" or bottle bomb is common household chemicals and items mixed in a bottle which then explodes.

The "all clear" was given at the school by mid-morning and students returned to class.
