Student could face charges after 2 BB guns found in locker at Rufus King Middle School

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee police responded to Rufus King International Middle School for a report of a student with a gun Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 28, and two BB guns were located. A student was arrested and could face charges.

It happened around 1:20 p.m. -- and several parents responded to the school, worried for their child's safety.

"My granddaughter Sydney called me crying. She said they were on the floor. It was an active shooter," said Debra Jackson.

"In this environment with school shootings, the first thing when you pick your heart up off the ground, you have to come down and see about your child," a parent said.

A statement from Milwaukee Public Schools indicates students reported to a staff member that another student had a weapon and was displaying it. Staff immediately found the student, isolated him and called the Milwaukee Police Department.

An MPS spokesman said two BB guns were found when a student's locker was searched. He noted "at no time did the student threaten other students. At no time was there a discharge from the BB guns."

As a precaution, the school was placed on a Code Red, which limited student movement inside and outside the building.

"I keep hearing different stories, but my daughter said it's a Code Red and it's not a drill, and when I get here, it's police in the school. They're not answering their phones. They turned the phones off," a parent said.

When FOX6 News crews arrived at the scene, our cameras captured a child being placed in the back of a police van. A brown paper bag followed.

"We just had a serious shooting in Florida... like, how many? 17 people? This is a 6th- to 8th-grade -- 6th- to 8th-grade and you brought a gun to school?" Temikia Mannery said.

The MPS spokesman said this incident is being taken "very seriously" and the student will face disciplinary action and criminal charges.
