MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee area school kids started decorating for the annual Holiday Lights Festival Friday morning.
“I love it because they get so excited to come and do it and it gets us into the holiday spirit,” said Kari Lampiris, with Marquette University Child Care.
In the next six days, November 15-20, more than 2,200 Milwaukee public and private students will be in Cathedral Square Park. All 60 pine trees will have a unique theme chosen individually by each one of the schools, and the hand crafted ornaments will represent that theme. For example, Bay View High School's theme is a "Red Cat Winter" so each ornament is decorated with their school colors -- red and black. Marquette University Child Care chose the theme "Elfing Around" and decorated elves for their tree.
Besides being a treat for the eyes, those involved in the decorating said that having the kids do involved makes it that much more fun.
“I think it helps show that the younger generation is invested in the community and they want to be a part of things and they are excited about our community,” said Lampiris.
“I think everyone really gets excited because children harness that holiday energy the most and when through the park you definitely feel that throughout the holiday spirit,” said Leah Thomas, with Milwaukee Downtown Bid #21.
The Milwaukee Holiday of Lights Festival kicks off November 21st and the decorations will remain lit until December 29th.
