Students must prove they're sober to get into this homecoming game

OCONOMOWOC -- Students at Oconomowoc High School may have to prove they're sober to get into Friday night's homecoming football game.

This year, the students at Oconomowoc will pass through a separate entrance -- and some will be randomly selected to take a breathalyzer test.

"We've seen a slight uptick in the number of students who have been drinking at events -- and certainly none of us wants to be dealing with that on a game night," said Joseph Moylan, Principal of Oconomowoc High School.

Moylan will be the one manning the machine as students stream in. He says the school has had a similar policy at its dances for several years.

"Certainly all of us want kids who come to the games here to be safe. And we want parents to be safe -- and we don't want to have to have tragedies as a result of drinking," said Moylan.

Moylan says he's had a little bit of parental pushback on the new policy -- with some saying they think it's a violation of students' rights.

"I'm not trying to violate anybody's rights. I'm just trying to say if you want to come to an event here voluntarily, that you have to be clean to do so. And in order to prove that that's the case, then we're going to breathalyze. So you make a choice," said Moylan.

The principal tells FOX6 News they're not checking how much alcohol a student has in his or her system. Rather, this breathalyzer will be set to simply measure whether or not any alcohol is present. If anyone were to test positive, he'll be contacting that student's parents to come and get them.
