STURTEVANT -- South Shore firefighters responded to a report of smoke filling a home along County Highway H in the Village of Sturtevant late on Friday, January 8th.
When they arrived on the scene around 11 p.m., firefighters found heavy smoke throughout the house, with an active fire burning in the kitchen. The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes.
According to a relative, the woman who owns the home was not there at the time but when alerted of the fire, she rushed home. The woman later was taken to Wheaton Franciscan Hospital in Franklin for breathing difficulties related to the fire.
Three pet dogs did perish in the fire. There were no injuries to emergency personnel.
The home’s kitchen area suffered extensive fire, heat and smoke damage. A preliminary damage estimate is approximately $50,000.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, but does not appear to be suspicious.
