LADYSMITH -- Authorities have a suspect in custody in the fatal shooting of a western Wisconsin sheriff's deputy.
Rusk County Sheriff Jeff Wallace says the man surrendered Sunday, October 30th. Formal charges are pending against the man.
Authorities have identified the deputy killed Saturday evening near Ladysmith as 33-year-old Deputy Dan Glaze. Officials had said the deputy was shot while looking into a suspicious vehicle.
Wallace says Glaze had served in law enforcement for seven years including 1 1/2 years at the Rusk County Sheriff's Office.
The sheriff has said the deputy responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle and told dispatch that it was in a field. Dispatch lost contact, and when backup arrived a short time later, the deputy had been fatally shot.
Attorney General Brad Schimel issued the following statement after Rusk County Sheriff’s Deputy Dan Glaze was killed in the line of duty:
“It is with the heaviest of hearts that I offer prayers and sincere condolences after Wisconsin law enforcement lost one of its own last evening.
Rusk County Sheriff’s Deputy Dan Glaze gave his life protecting his community. Now his family, friends and colleagues are forced to bear the pain of losing him. I offer my prayers for them and for all in the law enforcement community who are grieving this tragic loss.
Following last evening’s tragedy, a number of Wisconsin law enforcement agencies continued the hunt to find the suspect who killed Deputy Glaze. Earlier today, the suspect was apprehended and the public is now safe. Thousands of law enforcement personnel in this state put their life on the line every single day, for our safety. May the safety of our men and women in blue be in our prayers every day, as we realize the sacrifices they must make so that we may live in safe and secure communities.”
