Suspected drunken driver arrested in 64-year-old pedestrian's death

RACINE -- A 64-year-old man died at the hospital after being hit by an alleged drunk driver Tuesday night, July 30 in Racine. It happened near 6th and Marquette streets.

Off the clock and heading home around 11:30 p.m., Racine police officers spotted the man lying in the street.

"We have an off-duty requesting 10-39 for a man down on the southwest corner," said a 911 dispatcher. "Think it's a male possibly hit by a car."

The officers notified Racine rescue and started life-saving measures.

Police say during their investigation, a vehicle pulled up and the driver admitted to striking the pedestrian. The driver, thought to be under the influence of alcohol, was arrested.

"We'll need one more squad to the scene to assist," an officer can be heard telling dispatch. "Be advised that we have a traumatic hit vehicle... pedestrian. Five lateral fractures... a head injury."

The 64-year-old man was taken to the hospital and later died from his injuries.
