Hernia repair is one of the most common medical procedures performed around the world. But teaching it to doctors in far off places has been a challenge, until now.
Dr. David Chen and the team at UCLA’s Center for Advanced Surgical and Interventional Technology (CASIT) are using Google Glass to live stream hernia surgeries so doctors and medical students abroad can watch and learn. The hope is to find an affordable way to train doctors so they can use what they learn to heal the underserved communities in the future.
CASIT with charity group Hernia Repair for the Underserved and the American Hernia Society have already helped trained several people in Brazil and Paraguay with future Google Glass surgeries scheduled in the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Guatemala, and Ecuador.
