Teen accidentally shoots self, faces multiple charges
RACINE (WITI) -- A 17-year-old Xzavier Goodwin of Racine faces multiple charges after he allegedly shot himself while attempting to climb a fence near a school.
Goodwin faces charges of possession of a firearm on the grounds of a school, possession of a dangerous weapon by a person under 18, and obstructing an officer.
Police were called to a Racine home on Tuesday, January 8th after it was reported someone was shot. Goodwin had gunshot wounds to his leg.
According to the criminal complaint, he initially told police he had been shot while walking in a grassy area near his home. Goodwin's brother provided a similar story.
Rescue personnel on the scene of the shooting indicated to officers that the holes in Goodwin's pants were consistent with someone having a firearm in their pocket or waistband and then shooting themselves.
The complaint indicates when police questioned Goodwin a short while later, he admitted having the gun in his "waistband and was walking home from a friend's house." Goodwin told officers when he and his brother came to a fence, he removed the firearm from his pants. In the process of doing so, "it went off."
If convicted, Goodwin faces up to three-and-a-half years in prison and $10,000 in fines.
