Unearthing The Turf (8-4-2010)

GREENFIELD (WITI) -- For decades it was the Mecca of midwestern skateboarding. The Turf was a skateboarding park tucked away in a quiet corner of Greenfield. Skaters say the design was a simple as it was ingenious.

But skating's bowl era faded. As the sport moved to the streets in the mid-1990s, The Turf was closed.

Businesses set up shop on top of the park. But in August 2010, a road construction project cleared the skate bowls -- revealing for the first time in 15 years, the footprint of The Turf.

Skaters in the 30s and 40s came to the site and treated it as it it were an archaeological site. They came with shovels in their hands, memories in their hearts, with a mission to preserve a piece of history that was thought to be lost.

In removing the rubble, they were discovering themselves once again in a place called The Turf.
