There's a new app for people in the Milwaukee area searching for work

WEST ALLIS --There's a new app for the Milwaukee area, connecting workers looking for jobs and businesses looking to hire. It's called "Shiftgig."

Shiftgig, a Chicago tech startup, helps people connect with short-term and one-off job opportunities through an app.

Cory Howard had no work experience, until he started using Shiftgig.

"My first job was working at Marquette, banquet serving," said Howard.

Since May, Howard picked up six more shifts...

"I worked at the Brewers games many times," said Howard.

Shiftgig is different from your typical staffing agency. It's all via the app.

The company interviews and does background checks on workers, then gives them a username and password -- connecting them with local businesses in need of a temporary worker.

"They're looking to supplement, pick up extra money, pick up extra skills," said Jill Erickson, Chief Revenue Officer.

Shiftgig has offices in about a dozen cities across the United States. Their office here in West Allis has been open since May. They say the Milwaukee area was the perfect place to expand to for their business model.

"We are in the food service and hospitality industry, as well as retail warehouse and hotel --  Milwaukee is chalk full of that," said Erickson.

Workers search the calendar for available shifts. Jobs tailored to the worker are posted with a description.

The app shows the pay rate, gives a point of contact at the company, even GPS plots the location.

"It was the stepping stone that I am making to start off basically a career for myself," said Howard.

Shiftgig reps say they are connected with close to 100 businesses in the Milwaukee area and the list is growing.

The Shiftgig app is available on Apple and Android devices. The office is located at 6767 W. Greenfield Avenue in West Allis.
