"There's no point to it:" Graffiti cleanup at Sheboygan park costs thousands
SHEBOYGAN -- It took just a few hours, but what vandals did to a Sheboygan park is costing the City of Sheboygan thousands of dollars.
"It's a big park," Kayla Berceu said.
Police are investigating extensive graffiti found at Evergreen and Quarry Park in Sheboygan.
The graffiti occurred during the evening/overnight hours of Thursday, May 28th and Friday, May 29th. Graffiti was found at Evergreen Park, located at 3000 Calumet Drive -- and the Quarry, located at 3403 Calumet Drive.
"Why would they do it? It's dumb," Berceu said.
The vandals painted the word "beer" throughout the parks.
"Over and over again," Joe Kerlin, superintendent of Sheboygan Parks said. "They just left a trail. As they walked, they hit roads, they hit trees, signs, garbage corrals, posts."
The city has already spent $2,000 on materials to clean up the graffiti. Kerlin says it has taken nearly 100 man hours to clean it up.
Besides what it will cost to remove the grafitti, this is graduation week in Sheboygan. Evergreen Park is about to have one of its busiest weekends of the year. So obviously, city officials want the graffiti removed as soon as possible.
High-pressured water mixed with tiny bits of glass is the perfect solution, according to Jason Jacobi. He's been hired by the city to remove the graffiti.
"Everybody goes through such lengths to keep it looking nice and it's very unfortunate this has happened," Jacobi said.
"There's no point to it. Enjoy the scenery. Enjoy the parks. Enjoy the surroundings," Daniel Henning said.
If you have any information that could help police find those responsible for this vandalism, you're asked to give them a call.
