Three killed in 75-car pileup on Virginia highway, police say

(CNN) -- Three people were killed and dozens were injured in a 75-car pileup on a highway in Virginia Sunday, police said.

A series of crashes began Sunday afternoon as fog engulfed Interstate 77, Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said.

Twenty-five people were transported to hospitals for treatment, she said.

The pileup occurred near the Virginia-North Carolina border.
