MILWAUKEE -- Tommy Thompson, Republican candidate for Wisconsin's U.S. Senate seat wants to make Milwaukee an international leader in freshwater science and technology.

Thompson announced a proposal to pull the work of all water-related federal agencies together into a new national institute for freshwater science and technology.

According to Thompson's proposal, the new national institute would work with the Milwaukee Water Council and create jobs and long-term economic growth.

"The proposal is inspired by the simple concept that lead to the Milwaukee Water Council in the first place - that we can rebuild Milwaukee on the same foundation that established this great city - water-related industries and services," Thompson said.

Thompson is one of four Republicans running for Senate, along with Eric Hovde, Jeff Fitzgerald and Mark Neumann. Tammy Baldwin is the lone Democrat running.
