'Tragic:' Man dies after fleeing domestic disturbance, crashing vehicle into living room where family usually sits

RACINE -- A man was killed when police say he crashed his vehicle while fleeing officers after a domestic dispute in Racine. The man's vehicle slammed into a home where a family of four lives.

It happened around 7:45 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 22.

"It felt like a tornado hit the house. The whole house just shook," said Tiffany Davis. "When I walked downstairs, I just seen a big ol' hole in my living room!"

According to police, it all began when officers were called out to a home on Yout St. near Green St. for reports of a disturbance. Officers later discovered that the disturbance was an argument between a boyfriend and girlfriend -- and the boyfriend was allegedly breaking items in the home.

When police arrived on scene, the boyfriend left the scene in a vehicle at a high rate of speed. Racine police attempted to follow the vehicle, but were unsuccessful.

 

Officials later discovered an electric pole struck on Charles St. A stop sign and fire hydrant were also struck. The vehicle eventually stopped after striking a home on Jones Ave.

Tiffany Davis said no one was in the living room when it happened, but that room is where the family spends most of their time.

"Usually me and my daughter sit in this very spot right here. Luckily we were upstairs looking for my purse," said Davis.

The driver was transported to Froedtert Hospital -- where he later died as a result of his injuries.

Crews spent much of the day Tuesday boarding up the damaged home -- the front porch destroyed, while bricks and wood scattered the ground below.

"I feel really sad because I never thought this would happen to me," Davis said. "It's tragic what happened."

Davis said her son suffered some minor bumps and bruises, but was doing OK after this incident.

The investigation is ongoing.
