Travelers at Mitchell International respond to LAX shooting

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- As news of the deadly LAX shooting spread late Friday morning, November 1st, people at Milwaukee's General Mitchell International were learning about the situation.

One woman at the Milwaukee airport felt extra concern knowing her husband was at Los Angeles International around the time of the shooting.

It was panic, just panic," said Emily Exten. "I knew that he had a connecting flight from San Fran to LAX and he should have landed by the time I heard the news."

Reports of the shooting at Terminal 3 worried Exten that she hadn't heard from her husband. She recruited family members for help.

"I had my mom and my sister at home Googling to just try and figure out anything they could because I called them right away because I didn't have a computer," said Exten.

After half an hour of waiting, she received a text from her husband that said, "Hey just landed. Looked online quick. The shooter's in police custody already and they haven't said anything to us yet. Guessing things are back to normal."

A short while later Exten's husband sent another text informing her that the airport was on lock-down but they were being allowed off the plane. He also said no planes were allowed to leave and that he would be delayed for a while.

Another traveler, Mala Vang, had driven down from Green Bay before seeing the news at the airport. Vang was supposed to go through LAX on her way to Fresno.

"I'm afraid that maybe it's going to affect my flight because I have a layover there," said Vang. "We have all of our stuff with us, so if we have to spend a night in LA or wherever else, that'll just have to be."

Diana Stock was at Mitchell waiting for her son and grandchild to arrive from Seattle and says she noticed a change in the airport.

"You could feel a little air about people, looking around," said Stock. "We, ourselves, were wondering what was going on."

General Mitchell International officials say nothing changed with the airport during the situation.

FOX6 News reached out to the TSA for comment but calls have not been returned.
