"Truly amazing:" Milwaukee Co. sheriff's K-9 officers receive special protective vests

MILWAUKEE COUNTY -- Protecting our officers in the line of duty. Two Milwaukee County Sheriff deputies received protective vests on Saturday, May 14th after a fundraiser to buy a very expensive but important piece of equipment.

K-9 Flynn isn't nervous, he's just excited.

"They are dual-purpose dogs. They find drugs, narcotics and can also find people," said Duputy Tim Kraklow, Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office.

Same goes for K-9 Agies.

"We were overwhelmed by their response," said LeeAnne Sherrod, Mukwonago Animal Hospital.

The humans are pumped about it too!

"Truly amazing. This for me is the best. This is what it's all about," said Wisconsin Vest-A-Dog Founder, Donna Morgan.

Jazzed about the new K-9 vest! Two are being gifted to K-9 Officer Flynn and K-9 Officer Agies of the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office.

Mukwonago Animal Hospital did the fundraising.

"We asked out clients if they would be interested in rounding up their bill to donate money to the purchase of these vests," said Sherrod.

The humans definitely come through.

"They raised, I found out today, even more so we're looking at $5,000," said Morgan.

Wisconsin Vest-A-Dog is a non-profit group helping agencies like Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department afford bullet and stab-proof vests.

"This is actually the second time around with the sheriff's office because the vests are good for five years -- just like a human's vest," said Morgan.

The fundraiser collected more than enough money to buy two new vests and two first aid kits.

"It will potentially save their life which is fantastic," said Kraklow.

Since Wisconsin Vest-A-Dog was founded more than a decade ago, it has helped raise and purchase more than 360 protective vests for Wisconsin K-9 officers.

This was Mukwonago Animal Hospital's first time helping the cause.
