Two former Marquette students arrested for alleged computer crime

MILWAUKEE -- Police have arrested two former Marquette University students suspected of committing a computer crime on campus.

Marquette University officials say they alerted the Milwaukee Police Department of an alleged computer crime involving two university-owned computers. School officials say two former Marquette students installed software on two university computers, and didn't have permission from the university to do so.

The affidavit in the case says Marquette staff members received an email indicating computers may have been compromised. A keystroke-logging application was discovered on two computers. The affidavit says the application had additional capabilities including capturing images of the user's screen as an image file and making that image available to the suspect.

Surveillance video helped authorities identify the suspects.

FOX6 News spoke with Marquette students who said they were concerned when they heard the news. "It's better that (authorities) were able to handle it before it got out of hand," one student said.

School officials released a statement saying: "Marquette University takes any allegation of misuse of technology extremely seriously, and carefully monitors all aspects of its information technology systems."

Marquette officials say the university's databases and servers were not affected.
