Two Marquette Public Safety officers injured in altercation with student

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- FOX6 News has learned two Marquette University Public Safety officers were injured early Sunday morning, September 15th -- just after midnight.

It happened near 11th and Wisconsin.

"All of a sudden I hear a bunch of sirens out of my window because I`m on the Wisconsin Avenue side and I see like six police officers outside. Then two pulled up in front," Dino Desalvo said.

Emergency workers were on the scene after what Marquette officials say the Public Safety officers were responding to a verbal fight when they were injured.

"There was a lot of arguing going on. He freaked out when the officers tried to calm him down," Desalvo said.

Officials say a student became disorderly and aggressive and struck a Public Safety officer, before attempting to flee. During the incident, a second Public Safety officer was also injured.

The suspect was taken into custody a short time later.

"I think they did a real good job. My deepest sympathy goes out to them," Desalvo said.

The Public Safety officers are said to have suffered minor injuries. Meanwhile, many are disheartened to learn it was an MU student involved.

"They fought a police officer. That's against the law," Desalvo said.

Marquette University says it takes any allegation of student misconduct extremely seriously, and says any student involved in misconduct will undergo a student conduct hearing.
