Unemployment rose in all of Wisconsin's largest cities in January

MADISON — Unemployment rates rose in all of Wisconsin's largest cities in January.

Preliminary data the state Department of Workforce Development released Wednesday shows unemployment rates in every one of the state's 32 largest cities increased from December.

Racine had the highest rate at 7.2 percent, up from 6 percent in December. Fitchburg had the lowest at 3.3 percent. That's up from 2.9 percent.

Unemployment rates also rose in all 72 Wisconsin counties in January. Bayfield County, which is heavily dependent on tourism, had the highest rate at 10.5 percent, up from 8.6 percent in December. Dane County had the lowest rate at 3.5 percent, up from 2.9 percent.

The local unemployment rates aren't seasonally adjusted and therefore aren't comparable to the state unemployment rate. That stood at 4.6 percent in January.
