Update: Suspect admits to faking gunshots near Marquette campus
MILWAUKEE -- Marquette police said on Twitter Monday afternoon, March 27th they were investigating a report of shots fired near the Marquette University campus -- and just after 5:00 p.m., police said a suspect was in custody. Police revealed Tuesday, March 28th the suspect admitted he intentionally made sounds to mimic gunfire.
Officials say the suspect told detectives he made the sounds to intimidate neighbors with which he was having a dispute. A subsequent search of his apartment did not turn up any firearms or other evidence of gunfire.
The report of shots fired came in around 3:30 p.m. from the area near 20th and Wisconsin.
Police closed off the area between 19th and 20th Streets, and Wisconsin Avenue and Clybourn Street. Additionally, as a precaution, nearby university buildings, including the Child Care Center were locked down.
No injuries were reported.
The suspect was arrested and the case will be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office for review and possible charges.
