MILWAUKEE -- A 23-year-old man is dead following an officer-involved shooting that took place near N. 44th and Auer Avenue Saturday afternoon, August 13th.

The shooting took place around 4:00 p.m.

Milwaukee police say an officer stopped two suspects in a car near 44th and Auer, when both occupants fled from the vehicle on foot.

Officers pursued the suspects and during that time, one officer shot one suspect who was armed with a semiautomatic handgun.

"I heard bang, bang, bang, three shots and I knew they were gunshots," said Maxine Jeter, neighbor.

Jeter heard the gunshots from her backyard.

"I heard some yelling prior to that before the shots. I think maybe it might of been the police yelling at somebody," said Jeter.

That suspect died from his injuries at the scene.

"One man was armed with a handgun. An officer confronted that man in a gangway and the officer fired shots and that man is deceased," said Milwaukee Police Assistant Chief William Jessup.

According to police, the suspect has been identified as a 23-year-old Milwaukee man, with a lengthy arrest record.

Police say the handgun he was armed with was taken in a burglary in Waukesha, back in March. The victim of that burglary reported 500 rounds of ammunition was stolen along with the handgun.

As the 23-year-old man's family arrived at the scene, emotions ran high trying to understand what took place.

Jeter watched the aftermath unfold.

"It's too much. This brings us to tears," said Jeter.

The other suspect was arrested in this incident.

The officer involved in this shooting is a 24-year-old man, with six years of service with the Milwaukee Police Department, three years as an officer.

The officer was uninjured and will be placed on administrative duty during the investigation.

"Very, very violent 24-hours in the City of Milwaukee. Our officers are out here taking risks on behalf of the community and making split-second decisions. In this case, our officer attempted to stop two young men, one armed with a handgun, that officer had to make a split-second decision when the person confronted him with a handgun. This is a risk they take every day on behalf of our community," said Jessup.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation will be leading this investigation.

No other details have been released.
