Walker, Barrett campaign after recall primary election

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett won the Democratic primary Tuesday, May 8th in Wisconsin’s historic recall election, emerging from a field of three Democrats to face Republican Gov. Scott Walker in the June 5th recall election.

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker is the third governor in the nation ever to be recalled, and breezed through the May 8th recall primary election. Walker faced protest candidate, 23-year-old Republican Arthur Kohl-Riggs in Tuesday’s primary.

With four weeks to go until the recall general election on June 5th, a busy campaign is planned, and debates will decide the direction Wisconsin takes on issues of economic equality, disputes between labor and management and the perennial policy disagreements over taxes and jobs.

Governor Walker has made protecting taxpayers and business interests the central theme of his campaign thus far. He argues that he has made tough choices to fix a broken budget, and says he doesn’t deserve to be recalled.

Walker has said many times if he were to be removed from office, it would take Wisconsin in the wrong direction.

As for the Democratic primary, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett has called on all Democrats to unite behind the goal of defeating Governor Walker -- going after what he calls a failed jobs record and out-of-state financial backing.

"Instead of doing what he said he was going to do, which was to create 250,000 jobs, he looked for new ways to divide us from each other. That division is exactly opposite from the way I will governor," Barrett said.
