Waterspouts spotted over Lake Michigan near Kenosha shoreline

KENOSHA (WITI) -- FOX6 News viewers spotted waterspouts out over Lake Michigan due east of the Kenosha shoreline on Thursday afternoon, September 12th.

The Kenosha County Sheriff's Department tells FOX6 News the warning sirens sounded at 1:16 p.m. because of reports of a funnel cloud a couple of miles off shore south of 104th St. near the City of Kenosha.

At this time, there are no reports of damage and no indication the funnel cloud touched down prior to moving out over Lake Michigan.

Audrey Palmen was one of those who saw the waterspouts in person.

"The moment I saw it I was freaked out, almost to the point that I didn't take a picture. And then, I saw that it was kinda moving away from me. So I felt brave enough to take a picture and it was pretty cool," said Palmen.

The Kenosha Unifed School District enacted its emergency weather procedures after the reports of a funnel cloud started being noted. That called for all students and staff  in their 39 schools to go to a place of safety, as practiced during their weather drills. It called on them to go to a room without windows or whatever safety area was designated in the school.

A spokesperson says the district was given the all clear by county emergency management and students went back to class after about 20 minutes.
