Waukesha County Sheriff's deputy on administrative duty; arrested on suspicion of OWI

WAUKESHA COUNTY (WITI) -- Waukesha County Sheriff's officials say a deputy was arrested following a single-vehicle crash on Monday night, January 5th.

It happened shortly after 10:30 p.m. in the Town of Genesee.

Sheriff's officials say the deputy, identified as Paul Eckert was the sole occupant of the personally owned vehicle. Eckert wasn't injured.

Eckert was arrested by the Wisconsin State Patrol for suspicion of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.

Sheriff's officials say Eckert has 12.5 years of service with the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department, and he was off-duty at the time of the crash.

Eckert was cooperative with officials throughout the incident.

The Waukesha County Sheriff's Department has launched an internal investigation into this incident.

Meanwhile, Eckert has been reassigned to administrative duties pending the outcome of the investigation.
