Waukesha man unknowingly purchases grenade

WAUKESHA (WITI) -- The Waukesha Police Department evacuated the neighborhood near Wilson and Grand Avenues after a grenade was found inside a home.

"I opened it up and oh my god!" said Shane Dietrich.

Dietrich and a friend planned to make some extra cash by purchasing the contents of a public storage unit on Layton and Highway 100 in Greenfield.

When Dietrich got home, he began searching through his treasure trove.

"There's a grenade with a pin still in the handle," said Dietrich. "What's going to happen? Is my house going to still be standing? Is it a dud?"

Dietrich immediately called police and they quickly evacuated the neighborhood.

"They just said we can't go down this way, we have to wait until the bomb squad gets here and they'll find out more details," said neighbor Allison Neitezl.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Bomb Squad arrived just before 6 p.m..and rendered the explosive device safe.

"I'm still a little shaky," said Deitrich.

No one was injured during the incident. The bomb squad took custody of the device and is continuing to investigate.

Greenfield police are going through the storage unit to make sure there are no other devices like the one Dietrich found.
