93-year-old man hit, killed crossing street
A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle and killed in Wauwatosa on Friday afternoon, Feb. 9. It happened near near 103rd and Wisconsin.
WAUWATOSA, Wis. - A 93-year-old man was struck by a vehicle and killed in Wauwatosa on Friday afternoon, Feb. 9.
On Monday, Feb. 12, the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as David H. Gau.
Police said officers responded to the scene near 103rd and Wisconsin around 1:40 p.m. Gau was on the south side of the street attempting to cross when he was hit and died at the scene.
"It’s a sight you never want to see – helpless, sad," said witness Dale Walz.

He lived in the nearby St. Camillus Senior Community. There was a walker near a pickup truck within the police perimeter.
"This older guy with a walker came walking towards me, and I met him right at the corner and greeted him," Walz said. "Twenty steps later I heard the brakes of the truck, and then I turned – I heard the thump. I turned quickly, then I saw his body rolling down the street and I immediately called 911."

The driver whose vehicle struck the pedestrian stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, police said.
"The guy jumped out of his pickup immediately and came over, stood next to me and was distraught, obviously," said Walz.

Police have not said if speeding was a factor in the crash, but it is a danger others in the neighborhood said they recognize.
"If anybody was going 35 somebody would run over them – because this street is a raceway," said Roger Zrinsky.
Wisconsin Avenue was closed for almost five hours due to the crash investigation, and traffic was diverted at 99th and 104th streets.
The Wisconsin State Patrol is also involved in the investigation.

Unfortunately, within the last 6 years, this is the third time in which pedestrians who were members of the St. Camillus Community were struck by vehicles surrounding our premises resulting in fatalities. We ask that all drivers exercise caution and heightened awareness in respect to pedestrians and ongoing traffic. We send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of this cherished member and the entire Jesuit Community."
