"We look out for each other:" Sherman Park residents share frustration with unrest in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE -- Mischief, violence and mayhem took over a Milwaukee neighborhood this past weekend. But residents living there say what happened in the last 48 hours is not representative of the people who live there.

Among the charred businesses and vehicles is a series of manicured yards and well-kept homes.

"Sherman Park is one of the best areas in Milwaukee to live," said resident Cecil Brewer.

Brewer is one of the residents along the corridor rocked by riots this past weekend. The destruction has Brewer feeling frustrated.

"It's just a shame these kids are acting a fool," Brewer said. "I understand the protesting and the disgust they have not having a voice. I understand all of that. But they are going about it the wrong way."

Neighbors are angry about the violence they became victim of -- and also the perception and treatment of an area they call home.

"People want to have a great life here," said Kristofer Koneazny, a long-time resident of the Sherman Park neighborhood. "Care about their lives and property. We are at peace."

Brewer said he and his neighbors are close-knit.

"I know everybody along this block. We all get along. We are family. We look out for each other," Brewer said.

Koneazny made sure to connect with those passing by during the aftermath.

"My wife and kids and I came and sat on the porch as they walked by, met neighbors. We didn't know, did positive things together, cleaned up," Koneazny said.

Many residents say they are ready to get back to a positive atmosphere; get back to the positive vibe in Sherman Park.
