WASHINGTON COUNTY -- A West Bend woman was busted by her own handwriting while trying to report a stolen vehicle.
According to the Washington County Sheriff's Office, on Friday, August 26th, around 6:30 p.m., the 28-year-old West Bend woman wanted to report her vehicle as stolen.
During the investigation, the deputy learned the woman had been arrested earlier that afternoon in connection with a domestic abuse-type incident.
Then, it was determined that on Friday morning, around 4:00 a.m., the vehicle the woman was reporting as stolen was involved in a hit-and-run crash. It went into the ditch near Paradise Drive and Peters Drive in West Bend. The vehicle struck a utility box and the air bags were deployed. The car was left at the scene.
Officials say a note was left on the vehicle indicating the driver would be back later to pick it up.
The deputy investigating the crash attempted to contact the vehicle's registered owner with no success.
Later, the deputy investigating the stolen vehicle complaint obtained a written statement from the West Bend woman, and noticed the handwriting on the written statement matched perfectly with the handwriting on the note left on the vehicle at the crash scene.
Sheriff's officials say the West Bend woman admitted she lied about the vehicle being stolen because she didn't want to get in trouble for crashing the car.
She was arrested for obstructing.
