What`s that smell? Strange odor prompts evacuation of building at UW-Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The engineering, math and science (EMS) building at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee was temporarily evacuated on Tuesday afternoon, July 22nd because of a strange odor. It turns out, it was sewer gas that somehow got into the building's ventilation system.

The Milwaukee Fire Department originally got the call about the odor at 3:45 p.m. MFD's hazardous materials team was called to the scene to monitor the odor and help clean it up. The building has reopened.

"We evacuated the building, and, you know, investigated with our meters and found nothing toxic and just the odor from the sewer," Milwaukee Fire Department Battalion Chief Michael Blackwood said.

No one was hurt. No one reported any symptoms because of the odor.
