Off-campus housing fair at UWM

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee held a housing fair Wednesday, and UWM campus police were on hand to answer questions about safety.

Officers are always on campus -- 24 hours a day, 365 days year. They also patrol the area on a regular basis, including some of the nearby neighborhoods. But officers say despite their presence, students need to take their safety, and that of their home and property, into their own hands.

“You have to be personally responsible for some of your own personal property so it's about me giving information so you'll start thinking about what do I need to do when I leave the house, make sure I lock my doors, put up my property, if you have a bike,” said Officer Donald Brown with UWM Police.

So Wednesday they joined in on the housing fair to offer some tips to new renters and buyers.

“UWM police are providing safety tips with being safe in your neighborhood, and locking doors, getting to know your neighbors things like that,” said Officer Brown.

Officers also advise students have the campus police phone number in their phone, just in case. That number is 414-229-4627.

The fair, which took place 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday at the Student Union, was a result of a partnership between the UWM Neighborhood Housing Office and Campus Police.
