Wintry mix, icy roads pose challenge for drivers

MILWAUKEE - It was a slippery commute for many in southeast Wisconsin on Tuesday, Feb. 22.
Because of the dangerous travel, Acting Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson issued a weather emergency. City offices, health clinics, and libraries were all closed for the day.
Meanwhile, the Department of Public Works said the combination of ice, rain, and changing temperatures have made the cleanup rather tricky.
FOX6 News caught up with crews in the Village of Brown Deer – that have been salting since around 4 a.m. Officials say they are asking drivers to take it slow – as there are plenty of slick spots on the road.
"Streets that have any hills on them whatsoever just be really careful. The edges, watch out for any of that black ice but a lot of the hills in the village are pretty slippery right now," said Matthew Maederer, Brown Deer Director of Public Works.
Crews have been redeployed for ice control – which could affect your garbage and recycling collection this week. Officials say leave your bins out until they are emptied – and clear the snow and ice around them for DPW crews.

Due to the ice potential, DPW have increased Forestry staff available for tree emergencies. Trees broken, hanging or down must be reported to 414-286-CITY (2489) to be assigned for priority response. Response may be delayed if submitted by email or online. DO NOT touch any electrical wires!
Sanitation Collections: No service impacts at this time. Check milwaukee.gov/snow for changes and updates.
Parking: No changes to Parking regulations are expected. Winter Parking regulations began December 1st, with no parking 2am – 6am on through highways and bus routes. Posted signs take precedence, such as streets posted "No Parking Dec 1 – Mar 1". We encourage those that park on the street to sign up for E-notify and text message notifications at Milwaukee.gov/parking
