Wisconsin Avenue Bridge reopens after 10 months closed
MILWAUKEE -- The Wisconsin Avenue Bridge reopened Thursday, August 9th after closing in October, 2011 for a complete revamp.
Work included rehabilitation of the bridge's structural, electrical, hydraulic and mechanical components as well as new decking, railings and sidewalks.
Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett was on hand Thursday as the bridge reopened.
"It's important to have this bridge back in service to connect the east side of the city of Milwaukee with the west side of Milwaukee. Again, I am delighted we have finished this project and it is my hope that we won't have to close this bridge again," Mayor Barrett said.
On September 22nd, Art Milwaukee will host a block party in the bridge from noon until 10:00 p.m. to celebrate the bridge's restoration and reopening.
The Wisconsin Avenue Bridge was built in 1975.
The work was made possible by Federal TIGER (Transportation Investments Generating Economic Recovery) funds. The project development/construction was administered by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. The Department of Public Works provided technical support and project oversight.
