A woman in the UK received an overwhelmingly positive response from people around the world after she wrote an open letter to a man who called her fat.

Lindsey Swift says she was out jogging with her boyfriend when a stranger driving past leaned out his window to shout insults about her weight.

“Initially I was annoyed but not too perturbed,” she told Buzzfeed. “However, the more I thought about it that day, the more I realised how incredibly rude it was. I wondered what in the world would make anyone think that they had the right to comment on the size of my body when they know nothing about me.”

Instead of letting the hateful comments upset her, the 26-year-old took to Facebook to write a powerful open letter to her heckler.

The letter reads:

Swift told Buzzfeed that response to the letter has been overwhelmingly positive.

“I’ve had messages from people all over the world saying that they have experienced similar things and will think twice before getting upset in future, which is amazing,” she said.

Swift says she is not ashamed of her body and hopes her letter helps others feel the same about their own bodies.

“If my post makes just one person ignore the negative comments and carry on what they are doing without shame, then I’m happy.”
