Work begins to replace "highly deteriorated" pavement on S. 27th Street in Franklin, Oak Creek
FRANKLIN/OAK CREEK (WITI) -- The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) has begun work on the reconstruction of WIS 241 (27th Street) in the cities of Oak Creek and Franklin, in Milwaukee County. The project limits are south of Drexel Ave., to north of College Ave.
The existing pavement on this section of WIS 241 (S. 27th St.) is highly deteriorated and does not provide accommodations for bicycles and pedestrians. Project improvements will include:
A single lane closure has taken effect south of Drexel Ave. During the project, two lanes of traffic will be open in each direction on WIS 241, from College to Minnesota avenues, with turn lanes provided at the signalized intersections. Beginning the week of April 27, traffic may be down to one lane from south of Drexel Ave., to Minnesota Ave., until the traffic switch scheduled for mid-summer.
Utilities have been working in the area in advance of the project. Throughout the next several weeks, initial operations will involve storm sewer work and preparation for the upcoming traffic switch. This includes excavation of the landscape and installation of temporary traffic signals.
The contractor, Michels, plans to complete the $29.5 million project in fall of 2016. The schedule is weather dependent and subject to change.
