The world of sweeteners has some new players on the field; take a look

MILWAUKEE -- The world of sweeteners has some new players on the field. Our registered dietitian Lisa Grudzielanek with Your Tasty Life joins Real Milwaukee to talk about what's new in the sugar isle.

Stevia plants are naturally sweet, often called 'sweet leaf.' Stevia is widely available as powdered and liquid extracts. Teaspoon for teaspoon, xylitol is equivalent in sweetness to sucrose. Erythritol yields no increase in blood sugar.  Agave has the highest fructose content (85%) of any commercial sweetener on the market. Fructose causes insulin resistance and significantly raises triglycerides. Coconut sugar is made from sap that is extracted from the coconut tree. The taste is similar to brown sugar.
