2 goals late sparks comeback win for Admirals
ROCKFORD, IL -- The Admirals fought back from a 2-0 deficit and emerged with a 3-2 shootout win over the Rockford IceHogs Friday at the BMO Harris Bank Center.
The win stretched Milwaukee’s points streak to ten games. The Admirals are 9-0-1-0 with the last regulation loss occurring Oct. 29 against Iowa.
Milwaukee forward Vladislav Kamenev was able to put the puck into the net with 2:43 remaining in regulation to tie the game 2-2. There was a scramble in front of Rockford goalie Mac Carruth but the referee’s whistle never sounded and Kamanev was rewarded with his fifth goal of the season. Max Gortz and Trevor Murphy picked up the assists.
The Admirals were down with under five minutes to play before finally getting on the board with 4:47 to play. The Ads were on the power play and Alex Carrier, surrounded by several defenders on the left wing boards, was able to find a wide open Frederick Gaudreau in the right circle. Gaudreau had time to measure his shot and he fired it into the net for his third goal of the season and second on the power play.
Ads forward Kevin Fiala was the only shooter for either team to score in the shootout.
The IceHogs scored on their first shot on goal at 5:55 of the first period while on the power play. Cameron Schilling’s wrist shot from the right point found its way into the net of Ads goalie Marek Mazanec for his fifth goal of the season.
The Ads outshot the IceHogs 10-3 in the first period.
Rockford took a 2-0 lead when Tyler Barnes chased down a pass from Tanner Kero in the Admirals slot and ripped the puck past Mazanec for his first goal of the season at 17:51 of the second period.
Mazanec stopped 14 shots to earn the win. The 16 shots allowed by the Admirals were the fewest allowed by the team this season, two fewer than the 18 allowed on Oct. 29 against Iowa.
Milwaukee returns home Sat., Nov. 26 to host the Manitoba Moose at the UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena.
