A first for Miller Park: Grounds crew works to transform the baseball field into a soccer field

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The Milwaukee Brewers are now on their All-Star break -- but their field isn't! Miller Park is being transformed to host its first ever international soccer match scheduled for this Wednesday, July 16th.

As soon as the Milwaukee Brewers walked off the field on Sunday, the grounds crew got to work! They have 48 hours to transform the field from a baseball field to a soccer field -- for an event that's a first for Miller Park!

"The first thing we look at is keeping the integrity of the playing field,"

Miller Park officials have been planning for five months.

"We've been talking to Major League Soccer for 18 to 24 months,"

Five semi loads of sod have been hauled in to turn the baseball field into a soccer field.

"The majority of our other events are non-sporting related, so this will be the first time we've had a major sporting even that is not baseball," Jason Hartlund, the VP of Event Services said.

Another first for Miller Park: The grounds crew has even dug up the pitching mound!

"Since it was built back in 2000 -- so this is definitely a challenge there. Actually one of the biggest things we are concerned about is preserving our existing field,"

30,000 tickets have been sold for Wednesday's soccer match.
