Admirals score 2-1 victory over Rockford IceHogs
MILWAUKEE -- Pontus Aberg scored the game-winning goal in the middle of the third period to break a 1-1 tie and guide the Admirals to a 2-1 victory over the Rockford IceHogs Saturday night at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.
One night after giving up a season-high six goals Marek Mazenec was brilliant in net, stopping 27 shots to pick up his fifth win of the season. Mazanec was also a big reason why the team's penalty kill until finished the night a perfect 6-for-6
The Admirals got on the board first with 7:29 gone in the opening period. Pontus Aberg corralled a loose puck on the Milwaukee blue line and flipped a pass over the stick of a Rockford defenseman springing Vladislav Kamenev on a breakaway. Kamenev faked forehand before roofing a backhand over the shoulder of Rockford goalie Mark Visentin for his fifth goal of the season.
The lead wouldn't last, however, as Dennis Rasmussen leveled the score for the Hogs with 6:31 remaining in the first.
That was all the scoring there would be until Aberg scored with just over 12 minutes to play in the game. Aberg carried the puck into the Rockford zone and fired a wrister that was stopped by the Hogs Jake Dowell. Dowell was temporarily downed by the shot and Aberg easily picked up the loose puck and sent another wrister, but this one beat Visentin high glove side to make it 2-1 Milwaukee and eventually the victory.
The win completed a successful month for the Admirals as the team went 11-1 and set a new club record for wins in November.
The Admirals finish off a season-long seven-game homestand on Tuesday night when they host the Manitoba Moose at the BMOHBC at 7 pm.
