Admirals stumble in Grand Rapids, fall to Griffins 3-1
GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Goalie Jared Coreau stopped 16 shots to lead the Grand Rapids Griffins to a 3-1 win over the Milwaukee Admirals Friday at Van Andel Arena.
Milwaukee was outshot by the Griffins 36-17. The 17 shots were the fewest for the Ads in a game this season.
Admirals goalie Juuse Saros stopped 33 shots in the loss. It was just his second loss of the season.
After a scoreless first period, the Griffins got on the board at 7:07 of the second period to open the scoring. Dylan Sadowy received a pass on the right post and spun before he shot the puck into the net through the legs of Saros for his first professional goal.
The Griffins took a 2-0 lead at 2:14 of the third period. Mitch Callahan was able to sneak behind the Admirals defense when he received a pass from the left wing boards and shot it into the top left corner of the goal for his eighth tally of the season.
Harry Zolnierczyk spoiled the Griffins bid for a shutout when he scored on a breakaway with 2:52 to play in the third period. Adam Payerl blocked a shot at the blue line and sprang Zolnierczyk with the pass up the middle of the ice. The goal was Zolnierczyk’s third of the season.
Griffins forward Eric Tangradi scored an empty-netter at 19:50 of the third to cap the scoring.
Milwaukee returns home Sat., Dec. 10 to host the Chicago Wolves at the UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena.
