Admirals tie a franchise record nine consecutive victories
MILWAUKEE -- The Admirals tied a franchise record with their ninth consecutive win with a 3-1 victory over the San Diego Gulls on Saturday night at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.
Kevin Fiala, Freddy Gaudreau and Adam Payerl all lit the lamp for Milwaukee, while Marek Mazanec was brilliant again in goal, stopping 29 shots for his second win in as many games.
Fiala's first goal of the season just 3:28 into the game staked the Admirals to an early lead. Stationed on the goal line, Fiala gathered the rebound of a Cody Bass shot and chipped the puck off and over the leg pad of Gulls goalie Josh Gibson.
Former Admiral Chris Mueller leveled the score at one with a power-play marker 10:02 of the first. Mueller fired a shot from the left circle that trickled through the legs of Marek Mazanec.
Things would stay that way until 2:23 remained in the second period when Gaudreau found the back of the net for the third time in as many games. Viktor Arvidsson held the puck on the left half-wall and found Gaudreau streaking down the Milwaukee zone. The Bromton, QE native showed forehand to bring Gibson out of the net and then deftly brought the puck to his backhand, guiding it into the net with one hand.
The assist for Arvidsson extended his scoring streak to 12 games, the longest in the AHL this season and the longest by an Admiral in five seasons.
The Ads didn't make things easy on themselves in the third, however, and were forced to kill off four penalties, including 36 seconds of 5-on-3 time.
Adam Payerl sealed the deal for Milwaukee with an empty net goal with 22 seconds to play.
The Admirals look for a new team record 10th straight win as they continue their season-long seven-game homestand next Tuesday night when they host the San Antonio Rampage at 7 pm at the BMOHBC.
