After the soccer match at Miller Park, it's time to rebuild the pitcher's mound & gear up for Brewers baseball

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Workers at Miller Park were busy Thursday, July 17th -- doing something that hasn't been done since the stadium opened in 2001. They were busy building a pitcher's mound! They had to flatten the pitcher's mound to accommodate Wednesday night's international soccer match. Now, it's time to get Miller Park ready to host Brewers baseball games again.

Less than 24 hours after the soccer players left the field after Wednesday night's soccer match, Miller Park's grounds crew began the process of restoring the diamond at Miller Park.

"We had a great opportunity at Miller Park. The stadium was willing and able to, I would normally say move mountains, but in this case, you could say remove mounds to make this happen," Gabe Gabor with Major League Soccer said.

While soccer match promoters were impressed with the ballpark, the event itself made an impression on nearby bars, which were busy shuttling fans to and from Miller Park for the soccer match.

"Absolutely. It definitely helps. You get that extra day of making a little bit of extra money you normally wouldn`t have," Cheryl Briggs, a bartender at Kelly's Bleachers said.

Briggs says the crowd the bar saw on Wednesday night was similar in size, but different in taste.

"There was a lot of Corona and Hacker-Pschorr being tapped," Briggs said.

The soccer match itself was part of the U.S. tour for Chivas. While plenty of fans went to support the Mexican soccer club, many others were there to support Swansea City -- or simply the sport of soccer.

"We never go into a game thinking it`s a trial run, but when you do a game and you have the level of success we had in Milwaukee, it opens your eyes and certainly makes it a candidate for future games," Gabor said.

From corner kicks to the hot corner. The Milwaukee Brewers hope the next major sporting event at Miller Park will be this fall, but first -- they'll need a pitcher's mound!

The Brewers play in Washington this weekend before returning home on Monday. The team had a workout at Miller Park Thursday afternoon before they hit the road -- and that's why the grounds crew was busy Thursday.
